We Give Books, the digital reading initiative from the Pearson Foundation and the Penguin Group, today announced new support for Jumpstarts Read for the Record, a national campaign that raises awareness about the importance of early literacy by annually engaging adults and children in setting a new world reading record. Today, We Give Books is offering new ways take part in the reading event including an all-new digital reading record and a new campaign to give thousands of books to children in need across the country.

We Give Books makes it possible for anyone with access to the Internet to read Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney, the official book of this years Jumpstarts Read for the Record campaign, for free. All readers of the digital book will be counted today as part of the new record for the most people reading a digital book on a single day. Results of this new record will be available immediately at We Give Books. Also, for each digital book read at We Give Books, the Pearson Foundation will donate a new printed book to classrooms in Jumpstarts program. These books will be distributed throughout 2011 and 2012.

As part of Jumpstarts Read for the Record, We Give Books is also offering new ways to read. The campaign book, Llama Llama Red Pajama, is available online not only for computers, but for tablets and mobile devices, as well as in audio versions downloadable in both English (read by author and illustrator Anna Dewdney) and Spanish. Additionally, a video version in American Sign Language performed by renowned American Sign Language stand-up comedian Keith Wann is online. And a new partnership between Nokia and the Pearson Foundation makes available an interactive reading with Anna Dewdney, the capability to have an interactive reading session with someone in another location, and a Read for the Record downloadable app for Nokia mobile devices.

Presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign calls attention to the importance of early education and the long-term benefits of reading to children at an early age. Since 2006, more than seven million people have joined local Read for the Record reading celebrations; Jumpstart has raised more than $ 6 million to support their year-round work in preschools; and the Pearson Foundation has donated nearly one million books to local schools, libraries, and community organizations in conjunction with the annual campaign.

This spring, teams of outstanding high school students from across the country will give up lazing on the beach or playing video games for the opportunity to serve communities, explore a career, and learn how to make a difference.

An offering of the Civic Education Project (CEP), housed at Northwestern Universitys Center for Talent Development, CivicWeek programs engage diverse groups of high school students in weeklong, career-focused service-learning immersion experiences in communities around the country. Each program provides a unique opportunity for bright, motivated students to gain hands-on experience with important social issues while exploring careers that serve the public interest in fields like criminal justice, education reform, public health and urban development.

Under the supervision of trained CEP staff, groups of 14 to 18 students spend their days engaged in meaningful community service and meetings with prominent professionals and community leaders. Evenings are filled with team building activities, thoughtful reflection on the issues the group is exploring, and of course, relaxation and fun. CivicWeek challenges students not only to develop their individual talents, but to apply their skills and passions to make a difference in the world.
